Ryerson’s Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP) Prepares for Liftoff in Fall 2015

Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) Toronto Section News

SSEP

Undergraduate students from the Faculty of Science at Ryerson University were given the amazing opportunity to design a science experiment to be performed in space! The 9 week research competition was in collaboration with high school students across the GTA. More than 160 students participated in the competition and a total of 21 proposals were submitted. We congratulate Preet Kahlon, Francis Buguis, Gemma Mancuso, Modline Orange and Kugenthini Tharmakulasekaram for their proposal on ‘The Growth of Pleurotus ostreatus in Microgravity’. From this experiment, the students will observe differences in growth of oyster mushrooms on Earth and in microgravity. If successful, this can allow astronauts to recycle waste products.
Their winning experiment launch in the International Space Station (ISS) in Fall 2015.
