A Columbia University professor was asked if she preferred butter or margarine. She replied “I would rather trust a cow than a chemist.”  Such negative comments about chemistry are not unusual these days, even from professionals.  The focus is on “toxic chemicals” in our air, water, food and even in our blood.  A wave of myth and misinformation about chemistry is sweeping over society. Time to set the record straight, and Dr. Schwarcz spent an hour with a group of over 100 CICTor members, students and faculty at the the University of Toronto’s Department of Chemistry on March 4, 2011. The lecture was very well received and a big success for our local chapter. The event was one of a series of lectures by Dr. Schwarcz organized jointly by UNESCO, CIC and the CIC Toronto Chapter as part of the International Year of Chemistry celebrations.
